This is the image for the news article titled And the Winner is .... SHEPAUG!Our middle school video production team has been awarded the first prize in the 2016 White House Student Film Festival!!! Ms. Breanne Pitt and her students, Roxanne Edel, Kayleigh Hendy, Lydia Hagen and Sierra Wilson are currently at the White House where they have just been announced as the winners! Eliza Slastushinskaya, Jaxen Griggs and Mary Carew-Miller also participated in the creation of the winning film.

A description of the contest is stated below (from the Official White House web site):

“This summer, we invited students from all across the country to submit their submissions for the third annual White House Student Film Festival, themed “The World I Want To Live In.” We wanted today’s youth to tell us what they hoped the future would hold for us — Sci-fi lasers? Flying cars? Yourself as President? — in the form of a short film.

We received thousands of nominations — documentaries, animations, and live animation films alike — depicting all kinds of imagined worlds. Strikingly, few submissions envisioned a technology-driven, science-fiction-esque future. Rather, it seems that this generation of youth are inspired by something much more simple: the dream of a more tolerant, more fair, more environmentally-friendly world. One that is widely inclusive, and contains rich opportunities of access for all.”

The Shepaug submission, entitled “The World We Live In,” can be found here. More than 700 submissions were considered from around the country. Our filmmakers traveled to Washington, DC, this morning where they participated in the final viewing and judging of the fifteen finalists. Among other activities designed for the participants in this important White House contest, our students will take part in a screening of all of the final films on the White House lawn between the Rose Garden and the Oval Office. Tomorrow, they will be treated to a private tour of the US Capitol, thanks to the efforts of Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty and her staff! When they return to Shepaug, they will be assigned a mentor from the American Film Institute to continue their outstanding work.

We are very proud of Mrs. Pitt and her students!!
